NEWARK TO OBSERVE BLACK HISTORY MONTH
                         IN CITY HALL ROTUNDA, FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 19, AT 4:30 P.M.
                     Ceremony will be followed by raising of Pan-African Flag outside of City Hall;
                       Observance will honor Newark educator and pioneer Dr. E. Alma Flagg

Newark, NJ - February 17, 2010 - Mayor Cory A. Booker, Business Administrator Michelle L. Thomas,
members of the Newark Municipal Council, the Newark African Commission and other dignitaries will join with
Newark residents to celebrate Black History Month with a ceremony in the City Hall Rotunda, followed by the
raising of the Pan-African Flag outside City Hall, on Friday, February 19, at 4:30 p.m.

This year’s ceremony will honor Newark educator and pioneer Dr. E. Alma Williams Flagg, who became the
first African-American woman to serve as principal of an integrated Newark Public School in 1964, when she
was appointed to head the Hawkins Street School. Dr. Flagg subsequently became the first African-
American woman to serve as Newark Public Schools’ Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum Services in
1967. In 1985 a new elementary school was dedicated and named for her.
